[edit] Overview

Dale Carnegie began teaching night classes on public speaking at the 125th Street YMCA in Harlem, New York in 1914. The YMCA scoffed at the idea, telling him people would not pay for the class. Carnegie offered to teach the class on a commission basis of half the profits. Within three years, he was taking in over $500 per week.

Carnegie said “People came to my classes because they wanted to be able to stand up on their feet and say a few words at a business meeting without fainting from fright. Salesmen wanted to be able to call on a tough customer without having to walk around the block three times to get up courage.”

He eventually rented out an office in Times Square and began teaching his own clases and printing his own instructional pamphlets. In 1926, Carnegie published these pamphlets in the book Public Speaking: A Practical Course for Business Men, which became a standard public speaking textbook worldwide.

After Carnegie’s death in 1955, Carnegie’s wife, Dorothy re-edited and republished the book, renaming it The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking. The new form of Carnegie’s original collection of pamphlets continues to be a worldwide bestseller as well as the foundation document for many Dale Carnegie Organization seminars.
