[edit] Biography
Peter Luongo retired as president and CEO of The Berry Company in August 2003, after more than 33 years. During his last nine years with the company, Peter was instrumental in guiding Berry through a period of record sales growth, numerous contract acquisitions, and the perpetuation of the nearly 100-year-old company as an industry leader and “a great place to work.” Luongo’s message for audiences is simple: commit to supporting your team, give effective feedback, and accept accountability as leaders and teammates; it is a systematic approach that works, and is a reminder of the responsibilities people have to themselves, each other, and their customers.
Bettering the business. While Luongo’s career was dedicated to finding a better way of business, no initiative was more profound or had a greater impact than the development of Berry’s Management Creed—focusing on great people, a commitment to support them, well-defined expectations, effective feedback, and acceptance of total accountability for individual performance—which was subsequently installed as the operating philosophy inside The Berry Company.
Since he was appointed executive vice president of The Berry Company in 1994, Luongo made it his mission to make certain all employees understood how the model was developed. He traveled the country and the world, meeting with employees, customers, and industry partners to share his unique approach with an unrelenting sense of purpose.
Teaching his practice. Upon retirement, Luongo was accepted as an executive in resident at the University of Dayton School of Business and is serving as an associate professor teaching strategic planning in the M.B.A. capstone program. He also serves as acting director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Executive Development and is a member of the School of Business Advisory Board and a trustee of the Athletic department. Moreover, while his pursuit of giving back has played out on many stages, none is more important than taking his leadership message as an accomplished business leader, corporate strategist, and compelling communicator to organizations throughout the world.
Peter Luongo’s powerful message transcends business transformation, emerging technology, product innovation, and strategic imperatives. He shares with his audience how this behavior-driven model not only ensures long-term growth, but also creates an environment where employees feel valued, respected, and part of something special.
Luongo is a well-known and respected leader in the Miami Valley region. Since his retirement, he has dedicated himself to giving back to the community serving as Board Chair of the United Way, Vice-Chair of the Greene Hospital Board, and is a member of the executive committee of the Dayton Development Coalition.
