One very hot summer, during the Depression era in Wisconsin, a nine-year old girl Garnet Linden is contemplating on the drought that hit their farm. Her father is so worried because their crops are already drying up. She's aware that their bills are already piling up and this caused her father much worry. If the drought will continue, her father will have no crops to sell and no money to pay their bills. In addition to that, they also have a serious need to replace their old barn.
One evening, Garnet and her brother decided to go down to their swimming hole to cool off. As they are exploring the sand on their way home, Garnet spotted a small silver thimble in the sand. She picks it up and thought it might have some magic into it. His brother just laughed at her.Later that night, Garnet woke up with the familiar sound hitting their rooftop -- it's raining! Jay and Garnet went out in the rain and celebrated the end of drought in Wisconsin. Maybe the thimble is indeed magic!
The days that follow are filled with exciting events. Garnet's father received a letter saying that the government has approved his loan application to put up a new barn. In the midst of building their new barn, a young boy named Eric arrives in their farm. Eric said he has been hitchhiking and has no home nor family. Garnet's father decided that they could use some help in building their new barn and offered Eric to work for them. Eric proved to be a very big help in rebuilding their barn and other tasks in the farm. Eric is already considered part of the Linden family. Garnet is so happy now that she has two brothers.
It is now time for the big summer fair that Garnet has been looking forward to. Garnet is entering her pig Timmy. The Lindens had a wonderful time in the fair most especially Garnet; her pig Timmy won a blue ribbon! After the fair, all of them went home with very high spirits.
That summer is so full of surprises and wonderful experiences for Garnet that she is more convinced that the silver thimble had magical powers. She won't ever forget that summer -- her thimble summer!
