Overview

The Bible is the collection of canonical religious writings of Judaism and of Christianity. The books that are considered canon in the Bible vary depending upon the historic tradition using or defining it. These variations are a reflection of the range of traditions and councils that have convened on the subject.

Old Testament

Genesis

Chapter 37 Joseph, 17 years old, is Jacob's favorite son because 'he was the son of his old age.' Jacob made Joseph a coat of many colors and Joseph's brethren were jealous. Joseph had several dreams in which his family (represented by sheaves in the first dream and stars, the sun, and the moon in the latter) made obeisance to him. Joseph is sent to find his brothers who are feeding his father flock. His jealous brothers conspired against him, take his coat, and were about to cast him into a pit when they happened upon a group of Ishmeelites traveling to Egypt. The brothers sell Joseph for 20 pieces of silver. To cover their missing brother they dipped the coat in goat blood and brought it to their Father. The Ishmeelites sold Joseph to Potiphar (an Egyptian) who is an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard.

Chapter 38

Chapter 39 'And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man... And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.' Potiphar made Joseph overseer of the entire house and all that he had. Potiphar's wife continually asks Joseph to lie with her but Joseph refuses. One day when Joseph was alone in the house, Potiphar's wife caught him by his garment and ask him to lie with her; he left his garment and fled. Potiphar's wife accused Joseph of trying to lie with her and Potiphar threw Joseph into prison (the same prison used by the king). Joseph grew in favor with the keeper of the prison and was soon overseeing all the prisoners.
