The story took place in Rabbit Hill, a country crossroads near Danbury, Connecticut. Rabbit Hill was inhabited by rabbits, moles, field mice, and skunks. These animals have been suffering from hunger as the house nearby has been abandoned for several years and leaving the gardens untended that the animals lost their source of food.

One day, they learned that "New Folks" are moving in to the house. All the animals of Rabbit Hill are very excited about the new Folks moving in, and they wonder how things are going to change. When the new Folks moved in, they started to grow a vegetable garden. The animals made plans on sneaking into the garden for food. Soon they discovered that there's no need for them to sneak at night because these Folks are actually leaving food out for them every night.
