Little House in the Big Woods is a children's novel by Laura Ingalls Wilder and was published in 1933. This book is the first of the series of books known as the Little House series.

The Little House series (also known as "Laura Years") is based on decades-old memories of Laura Ingalls Wilder's early childhood in the Big Woods near Pepin, Wisconsin, in the late 19th century.

Historical background

In reality, the family spent in the Big Woods two periods - up to 1868, when they moved to Rothville, Missouri for a short while and then to Independence, Kansas, where baby Carrie was born. When it turned out they shouldn't have been there, they got back to Wisconsin and lived there up to 1874, when they started their journey to Walnut Grove, Minnesota, stopping for a while in Lake City, Minnesota.

Whereas, in the book the family already has baby Carrie with them and at the very beginning of the next part, they are starting their journey to Kansas, from which they will go to Walnut Grove.

It was actually in Pepin (not Walnut Grove) that Laura and Mary went to school for the first time. The school's name was Barry Corner School. Being only four, Laura was the youngest in the whole school.
