Book Summary
Most people have probably experienced flow at one point or another in their lives. Experiencing flow is similar to being in the zone, experiencing a feeling of timelessness, or having an out of body experience. Research shows that people are generally unhappy doing meaningless activities. On the other hand, people report being most happy when the following criteria are met:
- They are completely involved, focused, and concentrating, either due to innate curiosity or as the result of training.
- They have a sense of ecstasy, a feeling of being outside everyday reality.
- Great inner clarity - knowing what needs to be done and how well it is going
- They know they can accomplish their task; that their skills are adequate and they are neither anxious nor bored.
- They feel a sense of serenity and do not have worries of self. They experience a feeling of growing beyond the boundries of ego; instead experiencing a feeling of transcending ego in ways they had not thought possible.
- There is a sense of timeliness as they are thoroughly focused on present, oblivious of time passing.
- There is intrinsic motivation; whatever produces "flow" becomes its own reward.
